Peter and Petrova Quince
I read 'Ballet Shoes' by Noel Streatfield when I was very young and loved Petrova, one of my favourite characters, who was such a feisty tomboy, a little like me at the time.
I don't remember seeing quinces before in gardens but notice that now they are gaining in popularity although they are still such a rare fruit. They are mentioned in Shakespeare in 'A Midsummer's Night Dream' as one of the 'rude mechanicals' is called Peter Quince and quince jelly is a delicious accompaniment with cheese.
Peter and Petrova look as if they are enjoying this fruit discovered by them although the quinces were supposed to be part of a harvest festival in a church in Dorset, we bought a couple of the quinces and enjoyed eating them after I had drawn them.
