These little moorhen chicks always look so vulnerable, their parents defend them on our local pond against the visits of the juvenile heron who likes to fish. They are so light they can walk across the lily pads with their huge feet. The parents have more than one brood and they are not named after moors but the old english word mere which means a lake.
