Hector - Original

Hector is a very young herring gull chick, these are the birds who like stealing ice cream and chips at seaside resorts, they have got bolder with this behaviour and the local press have a field day with sensational stories about these birds taking small children and dogs.Their preferred diet not involving human beings is molluscs, crabs and hermit crabs inhabiting whelk shells which the gulls have learned to open by flying up and dropping until they crack onto a hard surface. It's good to try and eat your food in a sheltered spot away from the adult birds and their sharp eyes. We lost an ice cream to one at Lyme Regis! I love their plaintive cries and their chuckling calls. Contrary to popular belief they are a protected species and are on the declining species list.
