Elfrida with Mayfly - SOLD

Only one kingfisher is native to Britain

This little kingfisher, Elfrida, is definitely on the alert, but hasn't spotted the mayfly just below it's perch. These birds are expert at fishing, diving straight down into the water beak first, then emergining to sit on a branch with their catch.

Mayflies have an amazing dance over rivers and it can be imagined that they could be mistaken for fairies, they are a delightful insect and appear mainly in May and June for a brief period - in fact just a day. They spend much of their life as a nymph before emerging as adults.
