So many writers, poets and artists have drawn inspiration from the kingfisher, that halcyon rainbow bird of the river, so swift in flight with it's high pitched calling to be heard above a roaring, rushing river. Gilbert White (famous naturalist) from the eighteenth century wrote:


'the kingfisher darts along like an arrow'


such an apt description for such a fantastic bird.
